Welcome back!
After a nearly-exact two-year slumber, the podcast has been finally revived to help you envision what fashion could look like if we change our habits from the inside out, both as consumers and businesses alike.
In today’s episode, we’re discussing some incredible fibres from nature. This will be a two-part series, as we'll be covering a total of four materials: Mycellium, Apples, Coffee, and the Lotus Flower. While all of these materials come from nature, the process by which they arrive at the fashion stage is varied. Some get there with the help of modern technology and science, while others require precise craftsmanship that has been passed down through generations. Today we’ll be covering Mycellium and Lotus. So buckle up, and let’s dive into the world of Fibers Fashioned From Nature.
The Episode At a Glance:
Mycelium-based Leather:
In this section, we talk about what mycelium is and the science that makes these fibres possible. We will also discuss the technical aspects of the process, including cultivation, experimentation, growth, processing, and end-use.
Lotus Silk:
In this section, we'll explore what lotus silk is and the laborious process involved in extracting this unique fibre. We'll also dive into the characteristics of the fabric, the average time required to produce a single meter, how it is manufactured, and its various end uses.
Both these fibers have minimal environmental footprint and can be utilized to limit the reliance for fossil-based synthetics that continue to pollute our oceans, air and communities.
Sign up to the newsletter for Part 2 where we’ll discuss Apple and Coffee-based fibers.
