Today I’m so excited to be welcoming Irina Mckenzie, the Founder and CEO of FABCYCLE!

FABCYCLE is a social enterprise based in Vancouver with the mission of reducing textile waste by diverting usable materials from ending up in landfills. They work directly with local apparel manufacturers like factories, fashion designers and schools to collect the scraps, off-cuts, deadstock and ends of rolls that are left during the apparel production process and reuse or recycle them.

In this episode, we're breaking down what pre-consumer textile waste is, the challenges in the industry with recycling and repurposing both post and pre-consumer textile waste and the systems that we need to see for circularity to be attainable in fashion.

Questions we asked in today’s episode:

  1. What is pre-consumer textile waste?

  2. What are some of the issues you’ve identified concerning recycling/repurposing textile waste locally in Vancouver?

  3. Would you agree there need to be more sorting facilities that work specifically to recycle this waste (both pre/post-consumer)?

  4. How do you think we can improve waste reduction in the brand design stage or fabric stage to decrease our waste inputs?

  5. What does circular design/circularity mean to you?

  6. What actions do you implement in your business to contribute to circularity?

  7. What drives you to do what you do?

  8. What was the thing that “clicked” that made you start FABCYCLE?

  9. How can people get involved and support your mission?
